Ranger Manager Forum

28th October 2009

The Ranger Development Partnership …

Invite you to a one day Ranger Manager Forum

During the research for the production of the SCRA Ranger Development Plan, several Ranger Managers stated that they would value a forum of their peers in which to share ideas, discuss concerns, discuss developments in Rangering and promote best practice. The Ranger Development Partnership are keen to promote this forum and working together, will initiate the first of what we would hope will be a series of forum for Ranger Managers into the future.

The first forum will be held at Scottish Natural Heritage’s Battleby Centre near Perth on

Wednesday 28th October, starting at 10.30am and finishing in the mid afternoon.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Attendance is open to all; however, the forum is designed for those that have a direct responsibility for line managing Rangers – for example, Team Leaders, Senior Rangers, Head Rangers; those that have a line management responsibility for Rangers and help to draw together reports and work programmes for Ranger Teams. Attendance is free.

The forum is designed to be an arena for discussion of issues that are important to Ranger Managers. Therefore the agenda is to be set by those in attendance. To get the ball rolling, there are several topics that the Ranger Development Partnership have suggested to open the day;

1) National Update from the Partnership on work to date and work planned

a. Official launch of the Ranger Standards Manual and new Ranger website

b. Continuing Professional Development for Rangers

c. The next steps in establishing Ranger CPD

2) Discussion on National Reporting Structures for Rangers, based on SNH’s proposed reporting framework as circulated earlier this year

It is also considered that there might be a desire to discuss Single Outcome Agreements and how Ranger Service Outcomes are included within these, but as this will not affect all the audience present, this will be dealt with in a break out session, whilst other sessions are held on other topics. There will be plenty of time built into the day for more informal networking between attendees.

The Partnership hope that this forum will be attractive to a wide range of Ranger Managers and hope that attendance will be good. To secure your place at the forum and to discuss ideas for discussion on the day, please fill in and return the attached form to Niall Lobley, SCRA Chair.

The Ranger Development Partnership has been convened by the Scottish Countryside Rangers' Association, following on from successful working relationships formed during the 2007/8 SNH Ranger Policy Review. Members are drawn from local authority, regional and national parks, the National Trust for Scotland, Historic Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage. The Ranger Development Partnership has been working together, to deliver aspects of the SCRA Ranger Development Plan which is grant aided for 3 years by SNH, focusing on Core Skills and Competencies, Continuing Professional Development and support for the Ranger Profession within a changing political and financial climate. The Partnership hosted the popular and successful Ranger Rendezvous in late 2008.

If you have any queries or questions on the forum in advance, please contact Niall at or on 07720 774461
